A remarkable historic building in Easter Ross
Built in 1743, on the site of a previous church, with additions in 1796 and 1813, Edderton Old Church is the oldest unaltered church building in Scotland. It is cared for today by Edderton Old Church Preservation Trust.
A unique and special building
After falling into disuse in the late 1970s, Edderton Old Church underwent a full programme of restoration between 1997 and 2004 to return this very special building to its current condition, and preserve the building, and its rich heritage for generations to come.

Class II Pictish Cross Slab
The burial ground is the site of a very fine example of a 9th Century Pictish Cross Slab. Fragments of another, quite possibly much older 6th or 7th Century Pictish Stone were recovered from the burial ground and can be viewed in the church.
19th Century Preaching Ark
Also sited in the burial ground, a rare example of a 19th Century Preaching Ark, and benches. Used across the Highlands the years following the reformation, these arks were used by congregations that found themselves without a church building. The ark is a rare example, and is sited in the burial ground.
A Place at the Heart of Our Community
The building is now looked after by Edderton Old Church Preservation Trust, and remains a place for the community to come together. Although the church has no water, electricity or toilet facilities occasional events such as concerts and talks are held, and the building can be used for weddings and funerals by arrangement with EOCPT.
Opening Hours and Tours
The church is open regularly over the summer months, with a guide available to offer tours or answer questions. Viewing can be arranged outwith these times by contacting us through the website, or by email.
